An urban, high school IB mathematics teacher rambles on about his day.

End of Quarter 1

| 31 October 2006
My senior credit factory seniors are going to be the death of me. I had one kid who does nothing day after day other than whatever he does while I'm standing over him complain that he is failing after checking his grade. He wrote his name on his quarter final and that was all. Hmmmm....

The worst was another senior who didn't show up...well, he's shown up three times after enrolling in school late.

The two lovers in class, who only want to hold hands and stare into each others eyes both received "F"s for the quarter, doing 13% and 12% of the work. I guess that is something else that they have in common. I don't want to know what they do on their many "days off". The girl was the one who was in school more...she only was gone 26 days out of 41.

Next, my darling girl that I wrote about earlier this year because her parents are very frustrated with her was fourth from the bottom. She's in complete denial that she won't graduate....27% minus a work cell phone that is still in the office. She's more upset about the phone, I'm sure.

Fifth to last...I think that he has dropped, but nobody knows for sure. I can't get a hold of him. Kids don't know either.

Sixth, Mr. ButYouWouldn'tHelpMe. Missing 19 times this quarter. The other days he's talking to Ms D-....a success story!

Seventh, Ms. IKnowThatIHaven'tDoneWellButI'llGetBetter. I've heard her tell me that things will get better as many times as she wasn't here: 18.

Next, the lazy kid who gets distracted by others. He can't stop his childish giggling. The only time he stops giggling is when he pretends that he is ashamed that he didn't get his homework done when I ask for it.

Ninth, the girl who did her first four homework assignments by copying them. When I caught her, she got me back by not doing another one the rest of the quarter. For kids with decent attendance, she wins for having the least amount of work done.

Tenth worst grade, the kid who changed the most. I don't suspect drug or home problems, but he has changed, somehow. He was never doing great, but at least he had a shot until the last four weeks. He began coming late, did nothing in class if I didn't stand there with him, and now is failing miserably. Guess what he told me the other day....."This stuff is easy to understand, but I don't get it".

I'm too frustrated to go through the others, besides, I have grades to enter into the computer. When this school gets blamed for failing kids, I'll think back to this post and dream about slapping the politician in the face who tells me that I've failed.

Some stats:

IB Geometry

  • Number of students: 91 (three classes)
  • Number of passing grades: 91 (there were two dropouts during the quarter....one would have failed, the other might have)
  • Number of absences for the final exam: 1 (excused - took the exam after school)
  • Number of missing assignments/quizzes (out of 33)

Senior Credit Factory Class

  • Number of students: 56 (two classes)
  • Number of passing grades: 24 (there were about ten dropouts during the quarter....all would have failed)
  • Number of absences for the final exam: 12 (none taken after school)
  • Number of missing assignments/quizzes (out of 35 for most, less for others because they enrolled late....one student has one grade out of 30)

Of course you haven't failed them as a teacher. At what point do they start accepting responsibility for themselves?
At least you've got the geometry kids to balance it out.

I have or have had all of these, and the ones that drive me the most crazy are the lazy gigglers. I can take everything else, but the lazy gigglers make me NUTS in a way words can't even begin to explain.

I feel your pain. I have a freshman class right now with about the same stats as your senior credit factory.

Oh my goodness. IB sucks the life out of you.
How do you feel about teaching IB? Is it easier to teach a bunch of GPA-obsessed students than it is to learn with them?

So I created an account just in case you wanted to get back to me.

Don't get me wrong, I love teaching IB students. And most of them aren't GPA-obsessed. Like I wrote in an earlier post, my IB kids ask things such as "Why does that work?" whereas my other kids ask "Will this be graded?"

One reason kids join the IB program isn't because of grades at all. It is because they know that the kids in the other classes often don't give a darn about education and they come to IB because they don't want to be part of that "other" culture. Lots of kids take "C"s and "D"s in my class rather than taking the other geometry class where their grades would be higher.

To be perfectly honest, being in IB *hurts* your GPA, but most like it.
